So I recently caught the old sewing bug (I used to sew a lot when I was a kid - damn those sweat shops*). I would make my own clothes and such and gained a sense of accomplishment when I was done. I also enjoyed taking old clothes and making them fresh and flattering again.

Like all things, I outgrew them only to inevitably jump back on ye olde horse many moon down the road.

Okay, I will begin by saying 'Twilight' was absolute shite! This isn't coming from the fan of the books. If anything, I think they should have worked with the story of the book but not rely on its popularity or melodramatic dialogue that really doesn't translate well when you say it out loud (though, let's face it, the ~~film~~ flick will make a lot of money this weekend). This is coming from someone who has working eyes, ears and a brain. I'd like to think even the 'tweens will be insulted by this but then again, when in my 'tweens, I was loving 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'True Romance'.

This wasn't mean to be a review of the movie but I have to say this: you know when shows get a script and everyone does a round-table read-through? It's as though THAT was filmed and half-assed edited and then distributed.

But I digress.

My point about the above is this: Ummm, let's forget that you deluded yourself into believing you saw a half-decent movie. Did you just slam 'Harry Potter'? If one film (or series of films) made a smooth transition from books to screen, it's that one. That is all.

Going through some of my old CDs full of my work from college (believe it or not, I was heavily into Flash actionscripting and animations at one time of my life), I stumbled upon a folder from my creative writing class, an elective in my 5th semester. Among the works were some free verse poems, sonnets, short stories, even a play that I remembered was well-received when my group performed it.

Thing is I'm starting to see a theme in my works: they all center around death or loneliness yet I recall being very happy in those days. How pretentious of me...

So as a touch of nostalgia, I think I'm finally ready to share these with you and let you jump into the creative mind of a 22-year-old me.

PS: There is one poem that was more of a spoof... however it does involve killing a stripper.

The "Anytime" Movie List

Inspired by Pollyprissypants' post, I got to thinking what movies I considered my "anytime" flicks. You will noticed from the below list that a lot of them are musicals. What can I say, they are the best thing to have playing in the background in your apartment while you bake. The others on the other hand, well, let's just say they mesh well with my "anytime" mood. Unlike Pollyprissypants, I decided to put them in order:

10. Anastasia
Perhaps it's the magical songs that add to a very classically staged musical that's animated. A fantasy twist to a famous and tragic moment in history tacked on with the wonderful casting of John Cusack, Meg Ryan, Kelsey Grammer, Bernadette Peters, Christopher Llyod, Hank Azaria and Angela Landsbury. This film would in no way make it to my all-time top 10 films, but there is always a warmth to it when I watch and I find myself singing along (if I'm in my kitchen, I may be dancing... you don't know!)

9. The Commitments
This film also has an equal "anytime" soundtrack - one where no matter what my mood, popping in the soundtrack brings me to my happy place. And in this place, it really is the working man's music that makes this film a comfort to watch anytime... mixed of course with crude Irish humour :)

8. Shaun of the Dead
Though not the first nor the last collaboration between Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead's blend of many genres makes this the perfect film to place on anyone's "anytime" list. Why? Want some comedy? These gents have perfected it. Looking for a little romance? You see the fall and rise of it here. Is there room for drama? Pegg will surprise you. Yeah, but what about zombies? Funny you should mention that 'cause we got them by the droves!

7. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Do I really have to go into it?

6. Guys and Dolls
As I mentioned, (and this is only the tip of the ice berg) but musicals, to me, make the best anytime movie viewing. Why? Because they don't require a lot of attention. The mood and songs tell you the story and you don't even have to listen to the lyrics. What makes this musical great to watch (or at least be around) over and over again is its Broadway feel... that and Brando and Sinatra!

5. On the Town
A fantastic Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra film with a supporting cast that you just fall in love with! The songs are fun and singing along with it just makes this girl happy. It's worth noting that this MGM musical was one of the first (if not, THE first) musicals to be filmed on location and managed to combine sound stage numbers with the wonderful backdrop of New York City in 1949.

4. Firefly/Serenity
Taking a short break between rampaging musicals, I present you with one of the smartest sci-fi films ever. And yes, I say films because Firefly (the short-lived TV series that preceded the film Serenity) really was 14 movie-quality episodes. It was an amazing show that had the ability to make it through to at least 3 amazing seasons followed by maybe 2 or 3 more solid seasons that would've still been better than most of the crap out there.

3. Singing in the Rain
Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds - COME ON! This musical is the ultimate musical as it takes place when the silent film era was dying and being taken over by talkies, thus bringing musicals to the big screen. Most of the songs were not written specifically for this movie but were taken from other musicals and blended in the film (much like Moulin Rouge - a film that would've been in my "anytime" movie list 5-7 years ago). When one thinks movie musicals, this is your go-to film.

2. The Empire Strikes Back
This is my favourite movie of all time so I may be copping out (and being bias) when I give my reasoning for placing this on my "anytime" movie list but it really is THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!

1. Jaws
I consider this movie a masterpiece where the musical score tells the story as much as seeing what's on screen. There is one part in the film that gets me everytime (and I bet those who are reading this know exactly which scene I may be referring to). When Hooper is under water investigating the abandoned fisherman's boat and the head of said fisherman floats into frame... everytime I know to expect it and everytime I jump.

This is not a review. I will say this: for the most part, "I liiikkkeeedddd it....but!" I was looking for an old-fashion, swashbuckling adventure movie and Steven Spielberg still knows how to make one.

Here are some qualms I had entering this movie:

It will be a disappointing finale
TRUE - Let's face it, The Last Crusade is a tough act to follow let alone to have a worthy successor as a finale.
It will be hard to watch Harrison Ford get back into the role of Indiana Jones
TRUE... then FALSE - It started rough (almost forced) but he eventually broke out his inner Indy.

Shia LeBoeuf will ruin this movie
A very surprising FALSE - He in no way made the movie but he didn't ruin it. In fact, he was more or less handled in a way to tell the audience: yes, Indy has aged.

Cate Blanchett will be distracting in this movie
TRUE - What can I say? It's Cate-fucking-Blanchett!

I am really excited to see Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood again
TRUE - I really don't have anything to follow this up with.
This movie will be more in the vain of Temple of Doom
FENCE - Like Temple, it didn't involve an epic quest of, pardon the expression, Biblical proportions. And also like Temple, there was a grotesque scene involving a hord of insects. Though Temple still remains the far more superior movie (despite having a Willie Scott instead of a Marion Ravenwood).
There will be a lot of "yeah right"s in the audience
FALSE - There was a happy suspension of disbelief, the kind you should have when entering an adventure picture.

What bothered me (at the top of my head):

The actual Crystal Skull and its legend
Luckily for me, I made it secondary in my mind (despite it sharing the title with our protagonist). Or maybe, as I mentioned earlier, no matter what its story, it was not going to match that of The Last Crusade, even as a stand alone episode.

The Beginning
It was just hard for me to get back into that world at first even though I started my Indiana Jones week on Monday with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The look and feel of it didn't catch up with me until I saw Dr. Jones in his class teaching (weird, I know). From there, I saw him meld back into the role, hat and whip and all. I welcomed it finally.
Gratuitous use of 50s music
Well, technically there were only two scenes, But we get it! We are no longer in the 30s.
Too many people along for the ride
Indy had an entourage.

What I liked (at the top of my head)

The fear is still alive
Ya know what? After all those years, I'm glad that Indy never got over his fear of snakes.

Music by John Williams
The main theme? The Ark theme? Let's get serious!
His dry, cool wit
Some things don't go away with age.

Tip of the hat to Marcus Brody and Henry Jones Snr.
But where's Sallah?

A lot of LOL moments
I'll admit, this one was very funny. Not in the 'categorize as a comedy' sense, just that good ol' Steven Spielberg humour I both love and miss.
Hearing Indiana Jones say "I have a bad feeling about this."
Knowing we will never hear Han Solo say that popular Star Wars catch phrase ever again, hearing Harrison Ford say it again as the one and only Indy makes me feel all squishy.

And finally, Fun Facts:

True story. They dance and drink vodka while Nazis burn books and search for historic Christian artifacts.

This is TOTALLY a review!
So to summarize my exhausting points: It neither ruined nor added to the Indiana Jones franchise simply because I separated it from the "other holy trinity" (the first "holy trinity" of sci-fi/fantasy film for me being the original Star Wars pictures.). I liked it enough as an enjoyable movie and some bits are tasty treats for the fans but am not fully convinced it was an Indiana Jones movie.

Title vs. Title

I don’t understand why franchise movies must put some stank in their titles and thus making them very cartoony. I find it hard to take them seriously that way, much like adding “The Wacky Adventures of…” to any given title. This blog is inspired by the announcement of the new X-Files movie…

Here are some examples:
X-Files: I Want to Believe
Though this is really to get the common household X-Phile juiced in the pants, I don’t know if I’m warm to it. It does seem more personal and perhaps that’s what they were going for. I’d be content if it was called X-Files: Believe… Hell, I’d be ecstatic if all movies were titled Piper Maru.

X-Files: Fight the Future
Lame. This movie came out when X-Files the series was at its peak. I guess Fight the Future was referring to its slow downward spiral.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Grr!

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
Makes it sound like the most expensive B-movie ever.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Okay, I get the campiness of it though I never associated Indy as being super campy. I don’t know, could be my childhood talking. But, I will say Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, both as a film and film title, is a tough act to follow.

In 2006, while going through all the movies I saw that year, I was very impressed with how many actually left me pleased and yearning to discuss them further. This lead me to create blog entries dedicated to my top 10 favourite films of 2006:
#10 - An Inconvenient Truth (I later watched The Departed months after creating this list so that would've likely bumped this one.)

Now a new year has passed for me to reflect on the films that wowed me for the last 365 days. Thing is, I hardly went to the movies or rented anything and the few I did see were mediocre at best. There are definitely enough to make up a top 10 list but in all honesty, numbers 4-10 would be fillers. So now I present to you my Top THREE (3) favourite films of 2007.

Naturally though, I must begin with my least favourite. And calling them "least favourite" is being polite. I HATED these movies (in my defence, two of them were rentals picked by someone else.)

Spiderman 3 was a movie that also inspired me to write an extensive blog entry but I never finished it. Who knows? Maybe one day I will share with you my thoughts on that movie in a thesis titled: "Why a Third Addition In a Comic Book Movie Franchise Always Sucks".

The Return of my 90s Crushes

Pre-writers strike, I started noting a couple of shows that starred some of my favourites from the 90s. It's nice to see them getting some work.

Oh Tim Daly! Once you were the Sense to Steven Weber's Sensibility as Joe Hackett on Wings. Nice to see you play a very attractive doctor on Private Practice. Though I was never into Grey's Anatomy, its spin-off isn't horrible.

Just recently I discovered Northern Exposure reruns on the APTN channel and they are currently in the early seasons where Dr. Joel Fleishmann played by Rob Morrow was still the hot-tempered Jewish doctor from New York. This made me very happy. I caught one episode of Numb3rs strictly by accident one evening and it pleased me to see Morrow working again. However, I will not continue to watch this show; it is afterall, still a show about solving crime... with math.

Not only did David Duchovny come out from post X-Files oblivion for Showtime's Californication, but he's jumping back into X-Files fandom with a new X-Files movie. I don't have to tell you how happy this makes me.

Also, I thought of removing Gillian Anderson from that picture of Mulder and Scully, but who am I kidding? She too was a 90s crush of mine.

My life as a teenaged model

True story.

What started as a poster art contest turned into my fleeting 15 minutes as a teenaged model. More accurately, my 5 minutes as a Thunder Bay PSA commercial voice-over followed by 10 minutes as an Intercity Mall Holiday flyer model.

The PSA was for substance abuse… or rather, AGAINST substance abuse. It is also worth noting that because the girl who was supposed to be in said PSA commercial did not show, I was asked to step in her place.

Funny little piece of trivia: I cannot smoke to, for lack of a better term, save my life. So I had a bunch of grown-ups lighting up a cigarette and teaching me how to smoke in a parking lot (I was 16-years old).

Now how’s this for a contest: If anyone can find this PSA either online or a hard copy of it, I will supply the winner with a monthly supply of cupcakes for a year. Good luck!

My Thunder Bay

This is not so much a movie review, more like a reflection. I saw Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg at the tail end of TIFF this year. I went to this “docu-fantasia” (as the director deemed it) without knowing what to expect and not having read up much on it. So my first impression was that of seeing a college film project: a pretentious free verse poem on screen. The first part sets the tone, then the film dives into the personal history of the narrator (Maddin, himself) and blends with tidbits of the city’s past. Part of me was worried that this stylized documentary would grow tiresome 20 minutes in; it didn’t.

What it did do was remind me of my hometown: My Thunder Bay. It describes a strong and desperate need to break free from a town trying too hard and remaining so cold. The kind of town where there are urban legends that, though embarrassing and possibly bizarre, you can’t wait to tell big city folk about. One that, if anything, is a safe haven for childhood memories that can never be so easily torn down like the local hockey arena or swimming complex. Despite wanting to leave that town at a young and fiery age, you yearn to have those memories rebuilt and relived.

I'm a Frosted Mini-Wheat - the kind from the 80s and not that disgustingly catchy jingle that takes place at a tropical villa.

And what do I mean by that? Well there are two sides of me. I'd like to say one is healthier over the other but both boast their share of guilty pleasure.

I decided to engage both the diva and the geek within this weekend starting with a Madonna-centric dance party called Madonnarama. What can possibly suck about that? Though the party, which took place in a dangerously-at-full-capacity building, was slotted to go til 4am, I left early (early being 2:30) without so much as hearing a peep of the following songs:

I'm not big on seeing celebs though Adam West was there this year which prompted me to take my room mate with me (though we were unsuccessful). I usually go just to walk and browse about the comic book artists. This year I picked up some prints from an artist named Alana Machnicki who also does a comic called Corduroy High. Might have been the colours that attracted me - or perhaps it tapped into my love for robots and ninja cats:

I was in the middle of writing this blog for the FT website (aptly called Producer's Journal) when I suddenly realized I wasn't going to publish it. So instead it finds its way here:

About over a year ago, I was asked to work on a new series’ web site and I felt oddly proud to be part of that particular project. And the new series in question? Cycle One of Canada’s Next Top Model. A year has passed, and many things have changed or rather evolved: 1) the site for Cycle Two is probably one of the sexiest I’ve seen 2) the show stepped up its game proving to be more compelling and exciting than the previous year and dare I say, previous America’s Next Top Model cycles (oh no she dinnit!) and 3) I, in no way, helped or was a part of Cycle Two’s run.

And in doing so (or rather NOT doing so) I was not included in this year’s finale party. You know how our lovely FT producers are always blogging about the hottest parties they go to and come back with lots of sexy pictures and sexier stories? I‘m curious to know what you told your children, about where you got this new toy for them. And since we‘re talking about thieves, Thumbs Down to whoever found the full bottle of children‘s shampoo in the women‘s showers at Churchill Pool a couple of weeks ago and didn‘t turn it into the lost and found. I know it is just shampoo, but it was brought by the Easter Bunny to my four year old, and was adorned with her favourite Disney princess.

This time, the “R” stands for “Rant”

From time to time, I like to frequent the Chronicle Journal web site to see what shenanigans and going-ons my hometown is experiencing. I pass along to my Toronto friends the wacky stories about the residence's encounters with bears and bulls or I post various samplings of the Thumbs Up Thumbs Down section that often cause head-shakes and chuckles.

Then there was this story:

Dog saved after being stabbed
Andrew Rogala was busy barbecuing in his backyard Thursday evening when he heard the disturbing sounds. He and Bev Rogala, his wife, were celebrating her birthday by cooking shish kebabs and enjoying some cold drinks on their deck at 217 Stephens St., when he heard the next-door neighbour's dog cry out.
“I knew something was wrong when I heard this yelping,” Rogala said Friday.
He ran to his neighbour's backyard, where a corrugated
fibreglass shed was located. He poked his head in a small opening and saw blood on the floor and his neighbour holding the dog over a bucket.The man had one arm under the dog's chest and another around its neck, Rogala said.
“I said, 'What the (expletive) are you doing,'” Rogala recalled. “He said, 'It's OK, it's OK. I don't want the dog anymore.'”

I was horrified to read this but more so that I, in fact, knew the guy in question. His last name escapes me but his first name is Mel. He was born in the Philippines, moved here to live with his mother circa 1996, give or take. He was always polite, quiet and overall a genuinely nice guy. Though his and my family were not best friends, our parents were in the same social circle.

An argument or rather discussion I had with my friend Mel (different Mel) was that he is not crazy. Before she began, she stated clearly for the record that she does not condone what happened or that it justifies it in any way. Her argument was maybe he simply didn't know any better (again, not justifying what happened). For those who are not aware, dogs in the Philippines are not the same here. They are not members of the family. They are simply meat.

Before I can even fathom what happened to this guy, the problem I have is that I simply cannot wrap my head around such an inhumane act. Well, perhaps that's not a problem but merely a good thing. Is it because I was born here that I simply think that is insane? The guy is fucking crazy. There has to be a chemical imbalance for him to logically work it out in his head that because he does not want the dog anymore, stabbing it repeatedly makes perfect sense, like it's the only way to handle said situation. And quite frankly, if that was indeed the case, he's lived here Canada for over 11 years! Am I insensitive in thinking you wouldn't pick up on the fact that spilling a dog's blood into a bucket in your shed is frowned upon here?

I've stopped uploading photos of people to my flickr account and have just been added pictures of things I've baked and decorated. What does this say about me as a person?

I've been using my gmail account more and my hotmail less. Reason being because of Facebook.

I am incredibly stubborn about the following:

Once I've switched from winter coat to non-winter coat, I will not go back no matter what.
When people come over for dinner, everyone must be served with same plates, cutlery and glasses. It's unfortunate when I have more than 4 people over at a time in which I am very tempted to serve food on matching paper plates.

Things I've Noticed the fifth:
I naturally wake up in and around 7am everyday to go to the washroom.

RotD: Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

I know; not as sexy as Kate Winslet or as interesting as paint drying. On today's menu the theme is peanut butter and chocolate, and naturally this recipe sprung to mind.

Ingredients:
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 sq unsweetened baking chocolate

1/2 vegetable shortening
2 eggs

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

1 1/2 cup flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda

3/4 cup peanuts finely chopped

1 cup peanut butter chips

36 miniature peanut butter cups

Heat oven to 350F
Combine chocolate chips and chocolate squares in microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium heat. Stir after 2 min. Repeat until smooth. Cool slightly.
Combine sugar and shirtening. Beat at medium speed until blended and crumbly. Beat in eggs one at a time then add salt and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add chocolate slowly. Mix until well blended. Stir in flour and baking soda with spoon until well blended. Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Roll in nuts. Place 2-inches a aprt on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake for 8 min or until set. Do not overbake. Press peanut butter cup into center of each cookie immediately. Cool for 2 min on baking sheet then remove to flat surface to cool completely.
Place peanut butter chips in a bowl and microwave until smooth. Spoon into a sandwich bag. Seal and cut corner to pipe zigzags over cooled cookies.

Ode to Kate Winslet

My room mate and I decided to have an old fashion Tuesday girls night complete with chick flick (backstory to this: Tuesday used to be our pole dancing class night wherein afterwards us girls would go out for dinner and just BS). So on tonight's menu was dinner at Murphy's then pick up a chick flick. Knowing me, of course, I very rarely peruse the chick flick department. In any case, we rented The Holiday. I won't get into a long review on it because quite frankly... it's not very good (shocking, I know) and I don't feel like getting into what would make it better because, more shockingly, it wasn't THAT bad.

On with my initial intent. Something didn't sit right (besides Cameron Diaz's painful acting) and it was Kate Winslet. This actually hit me early in the film and it wasn't so much a "What the hell is she doing in this picture?" it was more like "IS she really in this movie? Has she EVER ever been in a rom/com?"

So, no secret: I have a non-sexual crush on Kate Winslet (she falls in the same category with Salma Hayek and Gillian Anderson) so seeing her in The Holiday was unsettling - not that I love everything's she's been in nor did she suck in this particular film. It was just unsettling. And if I may take a moment to praise my non-sexual crush: Kate Winslet is eloquent, graceful and gorgeous. Yes, even in Titanic.

Perhaps I'm just used to seeing her in films where she recites Shakespeare sonnets or plays an eccentric woman who erases the memory of her boyfriend or a girl who along with her lesbian girlfriend take said lesbian girlfriend's mom into the woods and beat her skull in with a giant rock.

It's all frightfully romantic.

Yes, I intended to post this right after #2. When that didn't happen, yes, I intended to post this right after the Oscars whether it won or not (of course, I knew the underdog wouldn't win but one can hope, right?) In any case, here I am finally posting what I consider my favourite film of 2006. And I told myself, when I do post it, I would dissect it and analyze as to why this film worked for me on so many levels.

Now that I'm here, I'm drawing a blank. Or rather, I just don't feel like it. That isn't to say I feel more indifferent to the film from when I first came up with my list or even from when I first saw it in theatres (and aside from Superman Return, it's the only film I saw more than once.) I just don't feel like stringing together words to articulate how I felt about this film. So instead, I'll let you do it. Here is a series of adjectives I'd use to describe Little Miss Sunshine:

So start of this year, I began my Top Ten Films of 2006 but, through no fault of my own, it seems the list stopped at #2 (seemed like a good place as any to stop a Top Ten list).

Anyway, allow me to recap:

Probably not [cough cough Goodfellas]. It also made me consider moving some of the films around but I decided otherwise. Where would it have fallen? No idea; that's why I didn't bother. So here's the Wild Card Honourable Mention:

I don't know what it is but I tend to get all sports-orientated when my brother is around. Actually, I do know what is it - my brother is around. In any case, he was in town on business (covering university hockey and yes, Lakehead Thunderwolves advanced beating York University) and he came over Sunday night to watch the NBA All-Star game which took place in Las Vegas this year.

Where am I going with this? Well to honour my sports-writer brother, here's my editorial on the game... from a not-so-sports-writer perspective:

I like games where the score is close and this one had potential, until it became evident that neither team practiced, however, one did want it more (I am, of course speaking about the Western Conference that won by almost 20 I believe). As much fun as the All-Star weekend is (I'm kicking myself for missing the dunk competition), it lacks that competitive nature that makes gameplay so exciting. That is, of course, until it gets to 4th quarter and player(s) were vying for the MVP spot [cough cough Kobe Bryant]. That boy quickly became an aggressive King Chucker.
